Founding The Calculated Chemist: A Journey of Science, Creativity, and Entrepreneurship

Tanner Gerschick, the founder of The Calculated Chemist, didn’t start with a clear business plan or even an interest in entrepreneurship. In fact, business wasn’t something that crossed his mind during his high school years. Life took him in a different direction when he was given the chance to travel as a model. It wasn’t something he initially set out to do, but Tanner embraced the opportunity, signing with modeling agencies in fashion capitals around the world.

While modeling, he had the privilege of working for respected brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Abercrombie & Fitch. His career led him to participate in various fashion productions, catalogs, and editorial shoots, including Esquire magazine. He also walked the runway for designers like Custo Barcelona. Although his modeling career brought some exciting experiences, Tanner found himself increasingly drawn to the science behind health and fitness, which led him to pursue a degree in biochemistry.

As he delved deeper into his studies, Tanner discovered a passion for organic chemistry. He joined a methodology lab focused on phosphorus chemistry, where he contributed to undergraduate research and presented his findings at several American Chemical Society (ACS) symposiums. This hands-on research helped shape his career, and after graduation, he accepted a role at Solvay Specialty Polymers, working in their Advanced Research in Sustainable Technology group. While there, Tanner worked on various projects related to high-performance polymers, contributing to patent applications and focusing on solutions for emerging markets.

Throughout his time as a chemist, Tanner maintained an interest in creativity, design, and the manufacturing process. With a desire to combine these passions, he started The Calculated Chemist, an e-commerce brand offering science-themed drinkware. It started as a side project, something that would allow him to explore a creative outlet while preparing financially for his future wedding and growing family.

The Calculated Chemist has since grown into a small business that Tanner runs from his home, allowing him to balance his work in research and development with entrepreneurship. The brand focuses on high-quality materials and elegant, science-inspired designs that resonate with STEM professionals and enthusiasts alike. With the flexibility of his job, Tanner is grateful for the opportunity to work from home and involve his family in larger projects whenever possible.
